“With an investment that could reach €210 million, the infrastructure in Achada Limpo will be the cornerstone of high clinical complexity in Cape Verde, reducing the historical dependence on medical boards.”
The Cape Verde National Hospital (HNCV) is the most ambitious project in the health sector since 1975. Following the approval of the implementation plan in December 2025, the government confirmed that the international tender is underway and construction is expected to begin in mid-2026. The facility will be built in Achada Limpo, Praia, occupying a strategic area to serve the entire archipelago.
Please note that:
-
The estimated cost rose to around €210 million to secure technology that currently only exists abroad.
-
Cape Verde spends millions annually on medical evacuations, an amount that the government hopes to convert into domestic investment with this new hub.
-
The project was publicly presented in July 2025, but the final visual details have not yet been widely disseminated on digital channels for public consultation.
What we know
The country eagerly awaits mid-2026, the date set for the start of construction of the new Cape Verde National Hospital. Located in Achada Limpo, in the capital, this building will not just be another healthcare facility; it will be the first high-complexity referral hospital built from scratch since independence. However, despite the technical details already being known, there is one detail that still piques the curiosity of Cape Verdeans: the final image of the building.
The mystery of 3D: Why haven't we seen the project yet?
Interestingly, unlike other major public works, the digital models and high-resolution 3D renderings of the National Hospital have not yet been made widely available for public consultation online. Although the government held in-person presentations with simulation videos in July 2025, the detailed images remain, for now, in technical offices and in low-resolution presentation videos. Andthis visual reserve increases expectations about the aesthetics of what will be the "crown jewel" of the healthcare system.
Comparison: What changes with the new hospital
What is already certain: Phases and capacity
What we know for sure is the magnitude of the project. The hospital will be implemented in phases. In its first stage, it is planned to build around 20,000 square meters, focusing on the areas that generate the most evacuations abroad: interventional cardiology and oncology (including radiotherapy).
When fully completed, the HNCV will cover 30,000 square meters and have a total capacity of 144 beds. This size was designed so that the unit can function as a quaternary referral center, the highest level of specialization, capable of performing neurosurgery and transplants that are currently unthinkable in Brazil.
Innovation and digitization
The hospital's strategic plan aims for a "Digital by definition" unit. This includes the implementation of a single electronic medical record system, which will allow a doctor in Praia to instantly access the medical history of a patient coming from Brava or Santo Antão. The use of artificial intelligence to support diagnostic imaging is another of the promises that places Cape Verde at the technological forefront of the African region.
Management and training
A sensitive and crucial point is human capital. The project envisages the HNCV functioning as a center for teaching and research. The idea is to create an ecosystem where national medical training intersects with highly complex clinical practice, enabling the retention of talent and the attraction of specialists from the diaspora. The management model should be public, but with operational agility to ensure that the million-dollar equipment does not become obsolete due to lack of maintenance.
In mid-2026, when the first stone is laid in Achada Limpo, Cape Verde will begin to design a new future. We hope that, by then, the visual design will finally be revealed in all its splendor, allowing citizens to visualize the home that will take care of their health for decades to come.
